What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students study named Native American nations from different U.S. regions. They compare homes, foods, clothing, art, tools, stories, and community traditions using maps, images, and short texts.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can locate each nation’s region and name accurate cultural details. They can describe at least one similarity and one difference between two nations, using evidence from a source.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume all Native Americans lived in tipis, wore the same clothing, or followed the same traditions. They may also speak only in the past tense and overlook Native communities today.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Using class profiles of the Seminole and Hopi, write one cultural similarity and one difference. Include one detail from each profile.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a U.S. region map and labeled picture cards for Seminole, Hopi, and Lakota homes, foods, clothing, and tools to sort.
Ask students to write: How are Seminole and Hopi homes alike and different, and what evidence supports your answer?
Play a matching game where students pair each nation with its region and one accurate cultural feature, then explain each match.
Read child-friendly pages from official tribal websites and compare one living tradition each community describes today.
