What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students locate Native American nations in four regions of North America. They name examples from each region and use a map to describe where those nations lived.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student places Pueblo peoples in the desert Southwest, the Haida on the Pacific Northwest coast, the Lakota on the Great Plains, and the Haudenosaunee east of the Mississippi River. They can point to each region on a map without treating all Native peoples as one group.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may place every Native nation in the same region or assume all lived in tipis. They may also confuse ancestral cliff dwellings with the homes of every Pueblo community.
How to Assess It
- Give students a blank North America map and the names Pueblo, Haida, Lakota, and Haudenosaunee. Ask them to write each name in its region and circle the Mississippi River.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a blank map and four nation cards, then have them place each card in its region using a labeled atlas.
Ask students to write two sentences explaining why a Haida village and a Lakota camp belong in different map regions.
Play a map match game with region cards and nation cards for Pueblo, Haida, Lakota, and Haudenosaunee.
Show a map of your state and ask students to find its region, then research the name of one Native nation with ties to that area.
