What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students locate four broad cultural regions on a North America map. They match examples such as Ancestral Pueblo, Tlingit, Lakota, and Cherokee peoples to the correct regions.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a blank map and a word bank, students correctly place several Native nations in their regions. They use location, housing, or movement patterns to explain each match.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat Native peoples as one culture or assume each nation lived in only one fixed place. They may think “cliff dwellers” were a single nation. They may also assume these nations exist only in the past.
How to Assess It
- Give students a map with four regions marked and the names Ancestral Pueblo, Haida, Cheyenne, and Haudenosaunee. Have them place each name and explain one choice.

Give pairs a blank map, nation cards, and evidence images, then have them place each card and justify one match.
Ask students to write: How did geography shape homes and travel in two regions?
Play a four-corner game where students move to the region that matches each nation, home, resource, or travel clue.
