What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare Florida Native peoples such as the Apalachee, Calusa, Tequesta, Timucua, and Tocobaga. They identify similarities and differences in location, food, shelter, and use of natural resources.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can place major groups in the correct regions of Florida and describe two accurate traits for each. They can support a comparison with details from a map or short source.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat all Florida Native peoples as one culture or assume they lived in the same environment. They may also confuse pre-Columbian life with changes that occurred after European contact.
How to Assess It
- Give students a Florida map and ask them to compare two named groups by location, food, and shelter using three complete sentences.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a Florida map and tribe cards, then have them match each group with its region, foods, shelters, and natural resources.
Ask students to write which two groups were most alike, then support their choice with two details from class sources.
Play a clue-card game where students identify a group from facts about its location, food, shelter, and environment.
Compare each group's location with a current Florida city, then discuss how local land and water still shape food and work.
