What Students Need to Do: Students identify why Europeans established colonies in Florida, including land claims, trade, wealth, and religious missions. They explain how colonization affected Native peoples through disease, conflict, forced labor, displacement, trade, and cultural change.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can connect a specific colonial action to a clear effect on tribes such as the Timucua, Apalachee, or Calusa. The student uses accurate facts and recognizes that tribes experienced colonization in different ways.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse European reasons for colonizing with the effects on Native peoples. They may assume all tribes had the same experience or that Native people simply disappeared without considering disease, conflict, displacement, and cultural survival.
How to Assess It: Give an exit ticket with two boxes: one cause of European colonization and one effect on a Florida tribe. Ask students to explain the connection in one sentence.

Lesson moves

Give pairs cards about missions, disease, trade, warfare, and displacement, then have them build and explain a cause-and-effect chain.
Ask students to write: Which effect of colonization changed Florida tribes most, and what two facts support your claim?
Play a matching game with tribe, colonial action, and outcome cards, awarding points only when students explain each connection.
Compare a historic Florida tribal homeland map with a current map, then identify one visible effect of colonization.
