What Students Need to Do: Students connect Florida’s location near Cuba, ports, and railroads to its use as a staging area for troops and supplies. They describe effects such as crowded military camps, increased business, and growth in port cities.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can use a map or source to explain why Tampa became a major departure point. The student can name at least two effects on Florida and support each with a specific detail.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think major battles took place in Florida or that Florida still belonged to Spain in 1898. They may confuse serving as a staging area with being a battlefield, or assume the war affected only Tampa.
How to Assess It: Give students a map showing Florida and Cuba. Ask: Why was Florida useful during the war, and what were two effects on Florida?

Lesson moves

Give pairs a Florida map, yarn, and port cards to trace troop and supply routes from rail lines through Tampa toward Cuba.
Ask students to write: How did Florida’s location help the war effort, and how did troop camps change Florida towns?
Play a cause and effect card match using military camps, port traffic, business growth, overcrowding, and sanitation problems.
Compare a Tampa war era photo with a current port photo, then list how military traffic can affect a city.
