What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify Indigenous groups living in Florida before European contact, including the Calusa, Tequesta, Timucua, and Apalachee. They explain how location and natural resources shaped food, shelter, tools, and trade.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can locate major groups on a Florida map and compare their ways of life. They support claims with details from maps, artifact images, or short readings.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think Florida was empty before Europeans arrived or that all Indigenous groups lived alike. They may also place the Seminole in pre-contact Florida, although that nation formed later.

How to Assess It

Give students a Florida map and two group profiles. Ask them to locate each group and explain one way geography shaped each group's life.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a Florida map, resource cards, and group labels, then have them match each group with its region and likely food sources.

  2. Ask students to write: How would life near Florida's coast differ from life in the northern farming regions?

  3. Play a sorting game with cards showing groups, regions, foods, homes, and tools, then have teams explain each match.

  4. Compare an archaeological site photo with a modern Florida map, then identify what nearby resources may have supported the settlement.
