What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students locate major Indigenous cultural regions in North America before European contact. They explain how land, climate, and resources shaped housing, food, movement, trade, and community life.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can match a society to its region and support the choice with geographic and cultural evidence. They can compare two societies without treating Indigenous peoples as one culture.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume all Indigenous peoples shared the same homes, food, and customs. They may believe cities, governments, and trade networks appeared only after Europeans arrived. Some may wrongly view Indigenous cultures as existing only in the past.
How to Assess It
- Give students a regional map and two society cards. Ask them to place each card, then cite two details that support each placement.

Ways to Teach It
Have pairs place picture cards of homes, foods, tools, and clothing onto a blank North American cultural regions map.
Ask students to write: How might life near the Arctic differ from life in the Southeast? Use three specific examples.
Run a matching game with region, climate, resource, housing, and food cards, requiring students to explain each completed set.
Use a current tribal nation website to compare a present community with information about its ancestral homeland and traditions.
