What Students Need to Do

Students explain why European nations founded colonies in North America and how geography shaped settlement. They compare Spanish, French, Dutch, and English goals, economies, and relationships with Native peoples.

Students can identify who settled a region, why they came, and how the colony developed. They support comparisons with details about trade, religion, resources, labor, government, and conflict.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat all colonies as English or assume settlers shared the same goals. They may also describe Native peoples only as helpers or enemies, ignoring distinct nations, choices, alliances, and resistance.

How to Assess It

Give students a map of four colonial regions. Ask them to label each colonial power and write one goal and one effect for two regions.
