What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify how selected societies organized daily life, housing, food, religion, government, trade, and technology. They use evidence to explain similarities and differences among societies.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can compare two societies using accurate details in several categories. The student can connect cultural practices to geography, climate, and available resources.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often confuse the Aztec and Maya or assume all groups lived at the same time. They may treat Mound Builders as one nation. They may also use modern stereotypes instead of historical evidence.
How to Assess It
- Give students a blank Venn diagram. Ask them to compare the Maya and Mound Builders with one similarity, two differences, and supporting details.

Give groups artifact, food, housing, and map cards to sort among the Aztec, Maya, Mound Builders, Ancestral Puebloans, and Inuit.
Ask students to write which society adapted most effectively to its environment, using two specific cultural details as evidence.
