What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify similarities and differences between named Native nations from at least two North American regions. They compare daily life, creative expression, beliefs, and community practices. They explain how climate, land, plants, and animals shaped choices without claiming that environment determined everything.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can complete a comparison chart or paragraph with accurate details about two named nations. They cite source evidence and explain at least one link between a local resource and a cultural practice.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often treat Native Americans as one culture or mix details from unrelated nations. They may assume every group in a region lived alike, or that environment fully determined beliefs and practices. Some describe Native nations only in the past, overlooking their continued presence.
How to Assess It
- Give students two short source cards, one about Haudenosaunee life and one about Pueblo life. Ask for one similarity, two differences, and one environment-to-practice link supported by the cards.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups craft sticks, clay, bark paper, and grass, then have them build a model shelter from one region and label each material choice.
Ask students to write: How did one available resource shape food, shelter, or art in two Native nations?
Play a card sort where teams match nation, region, clothing, shelter, food, and art cards, then defend one match.
Use a current tribal museum webpage to compare a living nation's art or music with an earlier example from the same nation.
