What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students place Indigenous communities before European explorers and settlers on a simple timeline. They recognize that many distinct Native nations lived across North America.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given picture cards, students correctly order Native communities, European arrival, and the founding of the United States. They explain the order using before, after, and earliest.
Common Misconceptions
- Some students think Columbus was the first person in North America. Others describe Native Americans as one group with one culture. They may also assume Native peoples existed only in the past.
How to Assess It
- Give students three cards labeled Native communities, European explorers arrive, and United States founded. Ask them to number the cards in order and explain their first choice.

Build a floor timeline with cards for Native communities, European arrival, and the founding of the United States, then place them in order.
Show two North American maps and ask, “What evidence shows that many Native nations lived here before Europeans arrived?”
Play First or Later: students sort event cards, then explain each choice using before, after, or earliest.
Use a Florida map to locate Seminole and Miccosukee communities, then compare their locations with a map of earlier tribal homelands.
