What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students read maps and globes using titles, symbols, keys, scale, and compass directions. They locate major land and water areas and describe where places are in relation to one another.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can choose the right map for a question and explain how its features help. They can locate familiar places, continents, oceans, major reference lines, and cardinal directions accurately.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat maps and globes as interchangeable or confuse land with water. They often reverse east and west, mistake the Equator for the Prime Meridian, or think map symbols look like real objects.
How to Assess It
- Give students a simple labeled map and ask them to circle the key, mark north, and write one sentence describing Florida's location.
