What Students Need to Do: Students find and point to their hometown, Florida, North America, Tallahassee, and Washington, D.C., on maps and globes. They explain how these places fit together geographically.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students locate each place without guessing or relying only on labels read aloud by the teacher. They identify Tallahassee as Florida’s capital and Washington, D.C., as the national capital.
Common Misconceptions: Students may name Miami or Orlando as Florida’s capital. They may confuse Washington, D.C., with Washington state. Some treat Florida, the United States, and North America as the same type of place.
How to Assess It: Give students a blank map and a globe. Ask them to point to North America and mark their hometown, Florida, Tallahassee, and Washington, D.C.
