What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students read titles, symbols, colors, and map keys to determine what a Florida map shows. They point to named cities, landforms, bodies of water, and cultural sites.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose the right map to find a given Florida place. They locate the place accurately and explain which title, symbol, color, or label helped.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse political boundaries with physical features. They may treat map symbols as actual pictures or search every map without checking its title and key.

How to Assess It

Give students physical, political, and cultural maps of Florida. Ask them to circle Tallahassee, the Everglades, and one cultural site on the correct maps.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Build a floor map of Florida, then have students place labeled cards for Tallahassee, the Everglades, Miami, and a cultural site.

  2. Ask students, "Which map would help you find a city, a river, or a museum, and why?"

  3. Play Map Match by having students pair Florida place cards with the correct physical, political, or cultural map.

  4. Plan a pretend Florida trip, using three maps to choose a city, a natural feature, and a cultural site to visit.
