What Students Need to Do: Students identify cities, historic sites, and other human-made places on a Florida map. They place labels in the correct regions and separate cultural features from natural features.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students accurately label major places such as Tallahassee, Miami, Tampa, Orlando, Jacksonville, and St. Augustine. They use map tools to explain each location.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse cultural features with rivers, lakes, and wetlands. They may place Orlando on the coast, name Miami as the capital, or reverse Florida’s east and west coasts.
How to Assess It: Give students a blank Florida map and a word bank with Tallahassee, Miami, Tampa, Orlando, Jacksonville, and St. Augustine. Have them label each place and circle the capital.

Lesson moves

Place a large Florida outline on the floor, then have students position labeled city and landmark cards using a reference map.
Ask students to explain how a city, historic site, or theme park differs from a river, beach, or wetland.
Play Florida Map Bingo by calling location clues while students cover matching places on labeled map boards.
Plan a Florida road trip connecting three cultural sites, then mark the stops and route on a map.
