SS.3.G.1 is a Florida social studies standard. These are the benchmarks under it.

  Use thematic maps, tables, charts, graphs, and photos to analyze geographic information.

• SS.3.G.1.2

  Review basic map elements (coordinate grid, cardinal and intermediate directions, title, compass rose, scale, key or legend with symbols).

  Label the continents and oceans on a world map.

  Name and identify the purpose of maps (physical, political, elevation, population).

  Compare maps and globes to develop an understanding of the concept of distortion.

What Students Need to Do

Students read maps and globes to locate places and describe direction, distance, and position. They use titles, legends, compass roses, grids, and scales to gather geographic information.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can locate a named place and explain where it is using map evidence. They can choose an appropriate map, interpret its symbols, and compare information across maps or a globe.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think north always means straight ahead or that map symbols show the actual size of features. They may also assume every map uses the same scale and shows Earth without distortion.

How to Assess It

Give students a simple map with a legend, compass rose, grid, and scale. Ask them to locate one feature, describe its direction, and estimate its distance from another feature.

   Build a model town with blocks, then draw a map with a title, legend, compass rose, grid, and scale.

   Compare a political map and physical map, then write three facts that only one of the maps shows.

   Play Map Detective using clue cards that require students to find locations by symbol, grid square, direction, or distance.

   Use a local map to plan a route from school to a park, including cardinal directions and an estimated distance.
