What Students Need to Do: Students identify the seven continents and five oceans by name. They place each label in the correct area on a world map.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students accurately label a blank world map without a word bank. They recognize that the Pacific Ocean appears on both sides of many flat maps.
Common Misconceptions: Students often confuse Antarctica with the Arctic region or treat Australia as only a country. They may label land as ocean or count the Pacific twice.
How to Assess It: Give students a blank world map and a word bank. Ask them to place all seven continent names and five ocean names correctly.

Lesson moves

Give pairs a laminated world map and movable continent and ocean labels to place, check, and rearrange.
Ask students to write directions for traveling from Africa to South America, naming the ocean crossed.
Play map-label relay, with teams taking turns placing one continent or ocean card on a large wall map.
Plan a pretend ship route between three continents, then list each ocean the ship would cross.
