Florida SS.K.G.1

SS.K.G.1 is a Florida social studies standard. These are the benchmarks under it.

• SS.K.G.1.1

  Describe the relative location of people, places, and things by using positional words.

• SS.K.G.1.2

  Explain that maps and globes help to locate different places and that globes are a model of the Earth.

  Identify cardinal directions (north, south, east, west).

  Differentiate land and water features on simple maps and globes.

What Students Need to Do

Students describe where people, places, and objects are using position and direction words. They use simple maps and globes to locate places, identify land and water, and explain how spaces are arranged.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can describe an object as beside, behind, above, below, north, south, east, or west of another object. They can use a simple map or globe to find labeled places and distinguish land from water.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse left and right when their viewing position changes. They may think maps show objects at their actual size, or that a globe and a map show Earth in the same way.

How to Assess It

Give students a simple classroom map. Ask them to mark the rug, circle an object north of the rug, and describe the door’s location using a position word.

   Use floor tape to make a classroom map, then place toy people beside, behind, north, or south of labeled landmarks.

   Show a playground picture and ask, "How could you tell a friend where the slide is?"

   Play Map Simon Says with commands such as move east one square, stand beside the lake, or place the bear above the school.

4. 04

   Walk to the cafeteria using a school map, pausing at each turn to name the group’s location and direction.
