What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify local weather and land or water features. They explain how these conditions shape people’s clothing, homes, transportation, jobs, and activities. They support each idea with a clear example.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can connect a local feature or weather condition to a sensible choice people make. The student can explain the connection using because.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think location means only a street address, or that the physical environment means only plants and animals. They may name local features without explaining how those features affect people’s choices.
How to Assess It
- Show a picture of a community near water on a hot, rainy day. Ask students to name two ways people might adjust how they live and explain why.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs blocks, blue paper, and toy cars to build a community, then explain where homes and roads belong and why.
Show a rainy-day community photo and ask, “How does the weather change what people wear, do, and use?”
Have students match cards showing local landforms and weather with cards showing suitable clothing, homes, transportation, and activities.
Check tomorrow’s local forecast and map, then have students choose clothing, transportation, and an outdoor plan for the day.
