What Students Need to Do

Students identify a place’s landforms, climate, vegetation, population, language, religion, and built environment. They compare places and explain how physical features and human activity shape each other.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students use maps, images, and short texts to describe a place with accurate evidence. They clearly separate physical features from cultural features and explain connections between them.

Common Misconceptions

Students may label roads, farms, or cities as physical features because they appear on maps. They may also treat culture as fixed or assume everyone in a place shares the same language, beliefs, and customs.

How to Assess It

Give students a map and two photographs of one place. Ask them to name two physical features, two cultural features, and explain one connection between them.

   Have groups sort photo cards into physical features, cultural features, and features shaped by both, then defend two choices.

   Ask students to write how a river, mountain range, or climate might affect where people live and what work they do.

   Play a place detective game where teams identify a location from clues about climate, landforms, language, food, and settlement patterns.
