What Students Need to Do

Students identify physical features, such as climate, landforms, water, and vegetation. They identify cultural features, such as language, religion, settlement, and economic activity. They explain how these features shape places.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given maps, photos, data, and a short reading, students accurately describe a place. They compare places and support each comparison with specific evidence.

Common Misconceptions

Students may confuse physical features with human-made features. They may treat political borders as natural features or confuse weather with climate. They may also assume everyone in one place shares the same culture.

How to Assess It

Show a physical map and population map of Egypt. Ask students to name two physical features and explain why most people live near the Nile.

   Give groups map, photo, and data cards for one country, then have them sort the cards and build a place profile poster.

   Write: How can climate or landforms influence where people live, what they build, or how they earn money? Use one named place.

   Play Place Detective, where teams identify locations from clues and label each clue as physical or cultural.
