What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students compare how people describe and picture the same place. They gather evidence from interviews, mental maps, news, poems, legends, and songs to explain why views differ.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify differences between two views of one place and point to details that show each view. They explain how experience, culture, or purpose may shape those views.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think different mental maps mean one person is wrong. They may treat poems, songs, or news reports as complete facts rather than one perspective. They may also confuse personal opinions with evidence.
How to Assess It
- Show two mental maps of the same park. Ask students to name one difference in viewpoint and cite one map detail as evidence.

Read a poem and news excerpt about Florida, then ask: What picture of the place does each source create?
