What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students find out how different people view the same place. They interview people, draw maps from memory, and look for clues in news stories, poems, legends, or songs.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can name two different views of a place and point to evidence for each. They can explain why a resident and a visitor might remember or describe different features.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think everyone notices the same things about a place. They may treat a memory map as an exact street map, or assume a song describes every part of a region.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to draw a map of a familiar park from memory. Then have them write how a younger child might draw it differently and why.

Ways to Teach It
Have pairs draw the school playground from memory, then compare which features each person included.
Ask students to interview a family member: What place in our town matters to you, and why? Share two different answers.
Read a short local news story and a poem about the same area, then sort details by each writer's view.
Play a song about your state and mark places it names on a map, then discuss which places it leaves out.
