What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use pictures, objects, maps, and short texts to learn about people and events from the past. They place events in order and explain how life changed over time.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can identify evidence about the past and tell what it shows. They can compare past and present life, sequence events, and name a reason for a change.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think old photographs show exactly how everyone lived. They may mix up event order, confuse past and present, or assume one person caused a major change alone.
How to Assess It
- Show students three pictures of the same community from different times. Ask them to order the pictures and write one change supported by visual evidence.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs replica objects or photographs to sort into past, present, or both, then ask them to explain each choice.
Ask students to write: What part of daily life has changed most since your grandparents were children, and what evidence supports your answer?
Play a timeline relay where teams place illustrated event cards in order and correct one misplaced card.
Compare an old local photograph with a current street view, then list changes in buildings, transportation, clothing, and land use.
