What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students describe people, events, and daily life from the past. They place events in order, compare past and present, and use pictures or objects as evidence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can identify what happened first, next, and last in a simple history. The student can name changes over time and point to clues that support an answer.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think every old story is true or that all past events happened at the same time. They may judge an object's age by condition instead of historical clues.
How to Assess It
- Show one old classroom photograph and one current photograph. Ask students to circle the older image, name two clues, and describe one change.

Play a first, next, last card game using three pictures from a familiar historical event or classroom timeline.
Have students interview an older adult about school, then draw one way school life has changed and one way it stayed the same.
