What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students tell how life in the past was different from life today. They place simple events in order and use pictures, objects, or stories to learn about the past.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can identify clues that show whether something is from long ago or today. The student can sequence events and explain one way life has changed.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think the past only means yesterday. They may sort objects by appearance instead of using historical clues, or confuse the order of events.

How to Assess It

Show three pictures of an activity from beginning to end. Ask students to place them in order and identify one clue about when the activity happened.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give students picture cards of telephones, clothing, homes, and schools to sort into long ago and today groups.

  2. Read a picture book about the past, then ask, "What changed, and what stayed the same?"

  3. Play a sequencing game where pairs arrange three daily events and explain the words first, next, and last.

  4. Invite a grandparent to share one childhood object, then have students compare its use with a similar object today.
