What Students Need to Do: Students identify who or what a familiar holiday or celebration remembers. They explain that celebrations can honor people, past events, and cultural traditions.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can name a familiar observance and give a simple reason people recognize it. They can describe one way people show respect, such as holding a parade, sharing stories, or displaying symbols.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think holidays are only about gifts, food, or days off from school. They may confuse which person or event a holiday honors. They may also assume every family celebrates in the same way.
How to Assess It: Give each student a holiday picture card and ask, "Who or what does this day help us remember, and how do people show respect?"

Lesson moves

Build a class remembrance table with holiday picture cards, flags, and tradition photos, then sort each item by person, event, or heritage.
Show a photo of an Independence Day parade and ask, "What are people remembering, and how does the celebration show respect?"
Play Holiday Match, where students pair an observance card with a person, event, or tradition card and explain the match.
Examine a local library calendar, find a commemorative event, and discuss who or what the community plans to honor.
