What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students name familiar national holidays and celebrations. They explain the person, event, achievement, or cultural heritage remembered through each one.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly connect examples such as Independence Day, Veterans Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and Juneteenth with what they honor. They can explain the connection in a drawing or simple sentence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think holidays are only days off, parties, or gift days. They may confuse Memorial Day with Veterans Day or assume every family celebrates the same holidays in the same way.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Choose one holiday and draw a picture showing what it honors. Complete the sentence, “We observe ___ to remember or honor ___.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs holiday picture cards and labels, then have them sort each card by person, event, achievement, or cultural heritage honored.
Ask, “How can a holiday help people remember someone or something from long ago?”
Play a memory match game using holiday cards and cards showing the people, events, or achievements they honor.
Mark three national holidays on a class calendar, then discuss what students may see in their community on those dates.
