What Students Need to Do: Students identify familiar national symbols, leaders, founding documents, and key events. They explain what each represents and sort examples into the correct group.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can name an example from an image or short clue, classify it, and describe its connection to the nation. The explanation includes an accurate supporting fact.
Common Misconceptions: Students may treat every patriotic image as an official symbol or confuse monuments with the people they honor. They may mix up the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, or think the Constitution was signed on July 4.
How to Assess It: Show cards for the U.S. flag, George Washington, the Constitution, and the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Students classify each and explain one choice.

Lesson moves

Give pairs picture cards of the Liberty Bell, Abraham Lincoln, the Constitution, and the Declaration signing to sort, label, and justify.
Ask students to choose the example that best represents the United States and write three sentences using one accurate fact.
Play four corners: read a clue, and students move to symbol, individual, document, or event before explaining their choice.
Examine photographs from a city hall or post office, then list visible national symbols and explain where else each appears.
