What Students Need to Do: Students identify familiar national symbols, such as the United States flag and bald eagle. They also recognize people, such as George Washington and the president, who represent the country.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students correctly name national symbols and well-known national leaders when shown pictures. They give a simple reason each image represents the United States.
Common Misconceptions: Students may confuse the United States flag with other red, white, and blue flags. They may identify any eagle or famous person as representing the country.
How to Assess It: Show pictures of the United States flag, bald eagle, George Washington, Canadian flag, robin, and teacher. Ask students to circle three that represent the United States and name them.

Lesson moves

Have students sort picture cards into two hoops labeled “Represents the United States” and “Does Not Represent the United States.”
Ask students to choose one national symbol and complete the sentence, “This represents our country because...”
Play picture bingo using the flag, bald eagle, White House, Statue of Liberty, George Washington, and the president.
Examine coins and classroom displays, then list the national symbols and leaders students find on them.
