What Students Need to Do: Students identify familiar national symbols in pictures, objects, and places. They name examples such as the American flag, bald eagle, and Statue of Liberty.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given a mix of picture cards, students select the national symbols and name them. They explain that these symbols stand for the United States.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think any red, white, and blue object is a national symbol. They may name an object correctly but not understand that it represents the country.
How to Assess It: Show pictures of the American flag, bald eagle, Statue of Liberty, birthday cake, traffic light, and school mascot. Ask students to circle three national symbols and name one.
