What Students Need to Do: Students identify familiar national symbols, leaders, and founding documents from pictures, names, or short descriptions. They sort each example and explain its connection to the country.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students correctly name and classify examples such as the U.S. flag, George Washington, and the Constitution. They give one accurate fact about why each example is remembered or used.
Common Misconceptions: Students often confuse the Declaration of Independence with the Constitution. They may classify a monument as a person because it shows one, or confuse Florida symbols with national symbols.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Label each item as symbol, person, or document: U.S. flag, Statue of Liberty, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Declaration of Independence, and Constitution. Choose one and explain why it represents the country.

Lesson moves

Give pairs picture and name cards for the flag, bald eagle, Washington, Lincoln, Declaration of Independence, and Constitution to match and sort.
Ask, “Which symbol, person, or document best represents the United States, and what detail supports your choice?”
Play four corners with Symbol, Person, Document, and Neither signs, then hold up cards for students to classify.
Examine a dollar bill or coin, list the national images and people shown, and explain why each may have been chosen.
