What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect each observance to the person, event, or document it honors. They describe why people observe it and name common traditions linked to it.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can match major observances with their historical origins and purposes. The student can compare similar observances, such as Memorial Day and Veterans Day, without mixing them up.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think Memorial Day honors all veterans, rather than service members who died. They may think July 4 marks the end of the Revolutionary War or that Presidents Day honors only the current president.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Choose one patriotic observance and name its historical origin, its purpose, and one appropriate way people observe it.
