What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify actions that show care for the country, such as respecting national symbols, observing civic holidays, serving the community, and voting when eligible. They explain how each action shows pride, responsibility, or support.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students can sort examples and nonexamples of patriotic actions. They can explain why an action shows care for the country without claiming that everyone must show patriotism in the same way.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think patriotism only means waving a flag or saying the Pledge of Allegiance. They may also think patriotic citizens must always agree with the government or that only soldiers can be patriotic.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Draw one way a citizen can show patriotism, then complete the sentence, “This shows patriotism because _____.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Create a patriotism collage with printed pictures of flags, civic holidays, military service, voting, and community service, then label each action.

  2. Discuss or write: “How can someone show love for the country without using a flag?”

  3. Sort action cards into “shows patriotism,” “might show patriotism,” and “does not show patriotism,” then explain two choices.

  4. Observe the school flag display or morning pledge, then write how the routine can show respect for the country.
