What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify actions that help a classroom or community, such as following rules, sharing, helping others, and caring for property. They show these actions during classroom routines.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can name several responsible choices and explain how each choice helps others. The student also follows through by taking turns, listening, and completing classroom jobs.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think being responsible only means obeying adults or avoiding punishment. They may also confuse helping with taking over someone else's task or expect rewards for every responsible choice.
How to Assess It
- Show a picture of a child leaving trash on the floor. Ask each student to explain and act out a responsible choice.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs picture cards to sort into responsible and irresponsible choices, then have them correct each irresponsible action.
Ask, “What is one responsible choice you made today, and who did it help?” Record student answers on a class chart.
Play Responsibility Charades using actions such as sharing supplies, returning books, listening, cleaning up, and waiting for a turn.
Take a school walk to spot responsible actions by students and staff, then make thank-you notes for two people observed.
