What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students name actions that make someone a responsible member of the school community. They explain how following rules, helping others, and caring for shared spaces support everyone.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students identify examples and nonexamples of good school citizenship. They can explain why a specific action, such as returning supplies, helps the school community.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think good citizenship means only obeying adults or getting good grades. They may also confuse being friendly with taking responsibility for rules, property, and others.

How to Assess It

Give students this exit prompt: “Draw or write one way you can be a good school citizen. Explain who your action helps.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs classroom action cards to sort under responsible citizen or not responsible citizen, then explain one choice.

  2. Ask, “What should a good school citizen do when someone is left out?” Have students draw and label a response.

  3. Play citizenship charades using actions such as sharing supplies, waiting your turn, cleaning a spill, and interrupting others.

  4. Walk through the school, spot one shared space, and plan one action students can take to care for it.
