What Students Need to Do: Students identify school rights, such as learning in a safe place and being treated fairly. They explain responsibilities, such as following rules, respecting others, and caring for school materials.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can name a school right and a related responsibility. They can explain how responsible actions protect everyone’s rights.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think a right means they can do anything they want. They may also confuse responsibilities with chores or believe only adults are responsible for the school community.
How to Assess It: Give students this exit prompt: “Draw one right you have at school. Write one responsibility that helps protect that right.”

Lesson moves

Have students sort picture cards showing school actions into rights and responsibilities, then explain one choice to a partner.
Ask, “What right helps you learn, and what responsibility do you have so others can learn?”
Play a matching game where students pair school rights with responsibilities, such as safe hallways with walking feet.
Tour the school and identify how classroom rules, crossing guards, and shared supplies protect rights and require responsible choices.
