What Students Need to Do: Students tell why a rule exists and who it helps. They connect rules to safety, fairness, and solving problems in different places.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students name a home, school, or community rule and explain its purpose. They can predict what might happen if people ignore it.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think rules only stop people from having fun or that every rule is a law. They may also believe rules apply only when an adult is watching.
How to Assess It: Give this exit prompt: “Choose one rule from home, school, or the community. Draw or write why people need it.”

Lesson moves

Give groups picture cards of common rules, then have them sort each card under safety, fairness, or order.
Ask, “What might happen if our class had no rule about taking turns?” and record student reasons.
Play Rule Match by having students pair rule cards with picture cards showing the problem each rule prevents.
Take a school walk to find posted rules, then discuss who each rule protects and what problem it prevents.
