What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students name familiar expectations at home and school. They explain how each one helps people stay safe, share fairly, or complete routines.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a familiar situation, students can suggest a reasonable rule and explain its purpose. They can also describe what might happen without it.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think expectations exist only to punish children or stop fun. They may also confuse personal preferences, such as favorite colors, with directions everyone follows.
How to Assess It
- Show a picture of a child running in a school hallway. Ask, “What direction should the child follow, and why?”

Ways to Teach It
Have students sort picture cards showing safe and unsafe classroom actions, then explain where each card belongs.
Ask, “What might happen if nobody cleaned up toys?” Record student answers beside a class drawing.
Play a matching game where students pair situation cards, such as crossing a street, with a fitting direction and reason.
Walk through the cafeteria with a staff member and identify posted signs that help people stay safe and organized.
