What Students Need to Do: Students trace a legal rule to the document or government body that created it. They classify examples as constitutional, statutory, administrative, case, civil, or criminal law.
What Mastery Looks Like: Given short scenarios, students correctly label constitutional provisions, statutes, agency regulations, ordinances, and court precedents. They also separate civil disputes from criminal prosecutions and explain their choices.
Common Misconceptions: Students may call every legal rule a statute or assume courts only enforce laws and never shape precedent. They may also mistake civil law for less serious criminal law.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: Classify a burglary statute, a restaurant sanitation rule, and a court precedent by source. Then identify which example involves criminal law.

Lesson moves

Give groups cards showing constitutions, statutes, agency rules, court decisions, and legal disputes, then have them sort and defend each placement.
Ask students to write: Why can a court decision affect later cases even though judges do not pass statutes?
Play Law Source Relay, with teams matching scenario cards to constitutions, statutes, regulations, ordinances, or case law and explaining each match.
Students use a city code website to find one local ordinance, identify who enacted it, and explain what conduct it governs.
