What Students Need to Do: Students identify actions that show care for the country and community. They connect patriotism with voting, community service, military service, and respectful treatment of national symbols.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can name or recognize at least two patriotic actions. They can explain how each action shows care for the country or its people.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think patriotism only means saying the Pledge or displaying a flag. They may also label any kind act as patriotic without connecting it to the country or community.
How to Assess It: Use an exit ticket with four actions: voting, cleaning a public park, littering, and damaging a flag. Ask students to circle the patriotic actions and explain one choice.

Lesson moves

Give pairs picture cards showing service, voting, flag care, littering, and vandalism, then have them sort the cards into patriotic and not patriotic.
Ask, "How can a child show love for our country?" Have students draw and label one action.
Play Patriotism Charades using cards for community cleanup, voting, military service, and respectful flag care.
Invite a veteran, election worker, or community volunteer to explain how their service shows care for the country.
