What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students describe how people celebrate selected holidays in the United States and other countries. They compare each holiday’s purpose, symbols, foods, music, and activities.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students name at least one similarity and one difference between two holidays. They use details from pictures, stories, videos, or class materials to explain their comparison.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think every country celebrates the same holidays or celebrates them in the same way. They may also assume that everyone within a country follows the same traditions.
How to Assess It
- Give students pictures of a United States holiday and a holiday from another country. Ask them to draw or tell one similarity and one difference.

Ways to Teach It
Sort photo cards from United States Independence Day and Mexico’s Independence Day, then place shared features in overlapping hoops.
Show two holiday pictures and ask students to name one similarity, one difference, and the visual clues supporting their ideas.
Play Holiday Match by pairing each holiday card with its country, symbol, food, or activity, then explaining the match.
Send home a family holiday interview sheet, then map the countries connected to the celebrations students report.
