What Students Need to Do: Students identify ways children and families lived in the past and live today. They name similarities and differences using pictures, objects, or family stories as evidence.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can compare one feature, such as clothing, chores, school, homes, or play. The student correctly labels examples as past or present and explains the choice.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think everything in the past was completely different or that old photographs show only grandparents. They may confuse something old-fashioned with something no longer used by anyone.
How to Assess It: Show one historical family photo and one current family photo. Ask, “Name one similarity and one difference, then point to evidence in each photo.”

Lesson moves

Students sort photos of toys, clothing, homes, and chores into past and present groups, then explain two choices.
Ask, “How is your day like a child’s day long ago, and how is it different?” Record or draw both answers.
Play a matching game where students pair past and present versions of school supplies, transportation, toys, and household tools.
Students interview an older family member about childhood games, then compare one game with a game they play now.
