What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students look at pictures, objects, or stories showing homes, schools, clothing, transportation, and communication from different times. They name similarities and differences using visible details.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given two pictures, students correctly identify which shows an earlier time and explain the clue they used. They state one accurate similarity and one accurate difference.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may think everyone long ago lived the same way or that every old object comes from one period. They may also treat fantasy details as historical evidence.
How to Assess It
- Show an old classroom photo beside a current classroom photo. Ask students to circle two differences and tell one thing that stayed the same.

Ways to Teach It
Have students sort picture cards of phones, clothing, toys, and transportation onto labeled mats for earlier times and the present.
Ask, "How would your school day change without computers, electric lights, or buses?" and record student answers on a class chart.
Play Then or Now by showing an object card and having students hold up a matching time label, then explain their choice.
Students interview an older family or community member about childhood toys, chores, or school, then draw one difference they learned.
