What Students Need to Do: Students decide whether information about the past is factual or made up. They use clues from photographs, objects, books, and other sources to explain their decisions.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students correctly sort examples as fact or fiction. They point to evidence, such as a dated photograph or an imaginary character, to support each choice.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think every old story is factual or that every picture shows a real event. They may also confuse realistic fiction with a verified historical account.
How to Assess It: Show a historical photograph and a fictional storybook page. Ask students to label each fact or fiction and circle one clue that supports each label.

Lesson moves

Sort photographs, diary excerpts, artifacts, and storybook scenes into fact or fiction hoops, then explain one choice using a clue.
Read a true account and a made-up story about school long ago, then discuss which clues show that one is factual.
Play Fact Detective: teams hold up F or M cards after each short statement and name the evidence they would check.
Compare a museum website image with a cartoon about the same person, and list what can be checked in each.
