What Students Need to Do
- Students decide whether a historical claim can be verified or expresses a belief, judgment, or preference. They use fiction and nonfiction sources to find evidence and explain their decision.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly label claims and cite specific source details as support. They explain that fiction can show perspectives or settings but needs confirmation from reliable historical sources.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume every statement in a textbook or quotation is factual. They may also treat opinions as false facts or use a historical novel as proof that an event happened exactly as described.
How to Assess It
- Give students a short source excerpt and three claims. Ask them to label each claim as fact or opinion, then underline evidence supporting each answer.
