What Students Need to Do: Students explain why people move from another country today, including family, safety, work, and education. They recognize that a person may have several reasons for moving.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students can name at least two reasons people immigrate and explain each with an example. They can discuss these reasons respectfully without assuming every family has the same experience.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think immigration happened only long ago or that moving within one country is immigration. They may also assume all immigrants move for one reason or come from the same place.
How to Assess It: Exit ticket: “A family moves to Florida from another country. Write two possible reasons they may have moved.”

Lesson moves

Give pairs picture cards showing family, jobs, schools, and safety, then have students sort them by possible reasons for moving.
Ask, “Why might a family leave one country and choose another?” Students discuss with a partner, then write one reason.
Play a matching game where students pair family scenarios with reasons such as work, safety, education, or joining relatives.
Read a child-friendly immigrant profile, mark the two countries on a map, and identify the person’s reasons for moving.
