What Students Need to Do: Students identify ways immigrants shape food, music, language, art, celebrations, businesses, and community life. They explain how a specific contribution affects people today.
What Mastery Looks Like: Students give a clear example and connect it to life in a community. They recognize that immigrant groups are diverse and that cultural traditions may be shared or adapted.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think immigration happened only long ago or that all immigrants share one culture. They may focus only on food and holidays, or call anyone who moves within the country an immigrant.
How to Assess It: Use this exit prompt: “Name one contribution made by immigrants and explain how people in a community experience it today.”

Lesson moves

Set up stations with photos, menus, music clips, and festival objects; students label each cultural influence and contribution.
Ask students to write: “How might a community change when new people bring their traditions, skills, and ideas?”
Play a matching game pairing contribution cards, such as restaurants or music, with cards showing their effects on community life.
Examine a local community calendar or business map, then identify two places or events shaped by immigrant cultures.
