What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students name people or communities from several ethnic groups and describe what they added to life in the United States. They connect each example to government, science, farming, art, labor, or civil rights. They use facts from short sources to support their examples.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can give accurate examples from at least three ethnic groups and explain each contribution in one clear sentence. The student does not confuse a person’s ethnicity with the contribution.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may list foods, holidays, or famous names without explaining the contribution or its effect. They may treat a broad group as if every member shares one culture or experience. They may confuse ethnicity, race, nationality, and country of origin.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Name one person or community from each of three ethnic groups. For each, write one contribution and its effect on life in the United States.

Ways to Teach It
Create a class mosaic with paper squares showing a person, ethnic group, contribution, and supporting fact from a short biography.
Discuss: Why should United States history include contributions from many ethnic groups? Cite two examples from class.
Play Contribution Match by pairing person cards with achievement cards, then checking each pair against a short biography.
Use a local museum website to find a community leader, artist, worker, or inventor, then record the person’s contribution.
