What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students explain why people moved from other places to the United States at different times. They connect people's experiences to work, land, safety, freedom, family, or forced migration.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a short historical account, students name a reason the person moved and cite one supporting detail. They distinguish between people who chose to move and people who were brought by force.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may assume every newcomer chose to leave and arrived freely. They may say everyone came for a better life without naming a specific reason. They may also overlook that Native peoples already lived here before European settlement.
How to Assess It
- Give students three short profiles: a worker seeking a job, a family escaping persecution, and an enslaved person brought by force. Ask them to identify each reason and underline the clue that supports it.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups profile cards and object cards, then have them pack a paper suitcase with objects that show each person's reason for moving.
Ask students to write: How is choosing to move for work different from being forced to move?
Play a clue-matching game where students pair historical situations with reason cards such as jobs, safety, family, freedom, land, or force.
Read a local immigrant's published story, then chart the person's reasons for moving and the challenges faced after arrival.
