What Students Need to Do: Students explain that many immigrants passed through Ellis Island when they arrived in the United States between 1892 and 1954. They explain why the Statue of Liberty was a meaningful sight for many people arriving by ship.
What Mastery Looks Like: A student can identify Ellis Island as a place where immigrants were checked before entering the country. They can explain that the Statue of Liberty stood for hope and welcome, but was not where those checks happened.
Common Misconceptions: Students may think every immigrant came through Ellis Island. They may also think the Statue of Liberty was the place where immigrants were checked.
How to Assess It: Show pictures of Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. Ask students to write one sentence explaining what each meant to an immigrant arriving by ship.

Lesson moves

Give pairs picture cards of a ship, the Statue of Liberty, and Ellis Island, then have them arrange the cards and explain the trip.
Ask, "What might someone arriving by ship have felt when they saw the Statue of Liberty?" Have students give a reason.
Play a sorting game with cards labeled "place for arrival checks," "symbol of welcome," and "both," using pictures and short clues.
Find Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty on a New York Harbor map, then trace a ship's route past the statue.
